Ok, first of all, if you are reading this and thinking that I'm blogging at work, I want you to know that I am eating lunch at my desk. (Paranoia is so sad, isn't it?)
I'm very cranky today. Now, don't get me wrong, I am delighted to be pregnant. I wouldn't change that for ANYTHING on earth.
That said, I'm tired. I'm not sleeping much these days. (I know, it's preparation for the baby. Yeah. Great.) The top five reasons I'm waking up every 1-2 hours each night:
1. I'm a stomach sleeper, so I can't sleep that way. So, I lie on my side. So what's wrong with that? See #2.
2. The compressing of my hips wakes me up with a lot of pain, so I flip over.
3. I have to go to the bathroom at least 4x/night. (I usually make a trip as long as I've been awakened for another reason.)
4. The sound of my own snoring wakes me!
5. My dog believes that 4 a.m. is the ideal time to lick my face.
Now, I could easily eliminate #5 by not letting the dog in bed with me, but that's really the least of my issues. Besides, I love to snuggle with her.
I've also had back pain for the last two days. Looks like a trip to the chiropractor is in order this week!
So, in conclusion...whine, whine, whah, wah, wah.

Babycenter.com Update: Week 23
About 17 weeks to go! I’m feeling pretty good this week. Spike is moving around quite a bit, but she’s not kicking strongly enough so it can be felt regularly on the outside. (As you may recall, the placenta is sitting in the front of my uterus, so there’s extra padding there.) We go to the doctor next week for the 24-week check up.
And here’s a reason to have sympathy for P.C.: Apparently I start snoring before I even fall asleep! I think earplugs might be in order for him.
Here's this week's update from www.babycenter.com:
How your baby's growing: Your baby is more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound. His skin is red and wrinkled. Blood vessels in his lungs are developing to prepare him for breathing. He can swallow, but he normally won't pass his first stool (called meconium) until after birth. Loud noises heard often in utero — such as your dog barking or the roar of a vacuum cleaner — probably won't faze your baby when he hears them outside the womb.

Babycenter.com Update: Week 22
Here's this week's update from www.babycenter.com:
How your baby's growing: Your baby now looks like a miniature newborn, checking in at 10.9 inches and almost 1 pound. Her skin will continue to appear wrinkled until she gains enough weight to fill it out, and the fine hair (lanugo) that covers her head and body is now visible. Her lips are becoming more distinct, and the first signs of teeth are appearing as buds beneath her gum line. Her eyes are developed, though the iris (the colored part of the eye) still lacks pigment. Eyelids and eyebrows are in place, and her pancreas, essential for hormone production, is developing steadily.

Come on down!
Last month, some coworkers and I went to a taping of The Price is Right. That show will be airing tomorrow (April 18) on CBS (check local listings). We had great seats—my big, pregnant self is sitting almost directly behind the contestant at the far right end of Contestant’s Row. I’m sure I look hideous, but it was a hoot. My coworker Alan and I cheered a contestant on and helped him win a car! According to another co-worker, I really got into the show and was on the TV monitor for a huge part of the time!
The fans are hysterical. Some of them had been camping out since the night before to get a place in line. It's a good thing we had connections--I never would have done that!
In any case, it should be funny to watch…

Home Again

I'm back in L.A. after a trip to Baltimore--my "last chance before the baby" visit. I had a wonderful time. It was so good to see family and friends.
I had the wonderful opportunity to meet my best friend Missy's baby girl, Siena (That's her picture above). What a sweet girl. Missy and her husband are doing such an amazing job with her.
(They asked if P.C. and I would join another couple and be Siena's godparents. I was truly, truly touched.) They have been given fair warning that I will be calling them many times a day, every day for advice after the baby is born! :-)
I also had the chance to see my grandmothers, aged 92 and 89. It's always with a little bit of sadness that I see them, knowing that they are getting older and more frail each time I visit. But I also know that I've been so, so blessed to have them in my life.
As much as I loved visiting Baltimore, I was also glad to get home yesterday. And that's a good thing--to be glad to visit my hometown but to also know that I belong here now.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention--I can now feel the baby kicking when I put my hand on my belly. I can't wait to see P.C.'s face when he gets home tonight and can feel his little girl kicking!

Poppin' in Baltimore
After reading my last post, Maya's Granny suggested that I post some photos of myself in my new maternity wear. And I'll do anything for Maya's Granny! :-) Unfortunately, most of my new clothes are in a box, being shipped to Los Angeles becasue my suitcase was too small. But I wanted to post a picture of myself and my pregnant belly. I had a bit of a "pop" overnight and my stomach is much rounder than it was yesterday.
An interesting note: in two earlier posts (post 1, post 2), I went on and on about all the different foods I loved to eat while I was in Baltimore. Interestingly, I haven't craved a single one while I've been here! I did get a gelati from Rita's, though. (That's #15 from post #2, although I opted for chocolate ice.) Spike loved it. Or, at least, I loved it for her.

Babycenter.com Update: Week 21
I'm in Baltimore this week, visiting family and friends while I'm still allowed to travel. It has been so, so good to see everyone. A highlight was seeing my best friend, Missy, and her newborn daughter, Siena.
Today, I FINALLY found a bunch of maternity clothes that fit at Motherhood Maternity. I suspected that I'd be able to find a better selection of bigger sizes in Baltimore. (Los Angeles is not a good town for maternity-wear shoppping if you have larger-than-average breasts and aren't a size 4.) Nothing I bought makes me look like a supermodel, but I do feel comfortable in the clothes, which is a VERY big deal.
Here's this week's update from www.babycenter.com:
How your baby's growing: Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long. His eyebrows and eyelids are fully developed. And you can certainly feel him move. He's oblivious to your schedule, though, so don't be surprised if he starts working out just when you're settling down for the night. If you're having a girl, her vagina is formed now, though it will continue to develop until birth.

Sniffles and Heartburn and Daycare—oh my!
I went to the chiropractor today to help beef up my immune system. (I’ve caught a cold that has been going around the office.) It’s so amazing—he does some acupressure on my sinuses and they start to drain immediately. I hope this cold is a fast one—I’m set to go to Baltimore on Sunday for my “last chance before the baby” visit.
I’m also dealing with pregnancy heartburn. I know very few women who didn’t have heartburn during pregnancy—the uterus pushes the stomach up, causing reflux. Icky. Luckily, it’s not too bad at this point. Of course, I still have about 20 weeks to go! Oh, well. I’d still take this over not being pregnant!
I went to visit two daycare centers yesterday, both recommended by friends who have children there. Both places were really lovely, with different qualities. One was at the home of a woman who cooks organic meals for the bigger kids and puts the babies down for naps in real bedrooms, as opposed to a big room with lots of cribs in it. The other was a center that also functioned as a preschool for the older kids. There were separate areas for infants, toddlers and preschool children. In the infant section, there are only 8 kids there at a time, with two caregivers with them. I put a deposit down at that place. I may keep looking, but the vibe I got there was fantastic. Both places made me smile though—they were full of happy kids. And that’s something you just can’t fake!

Babycenter.com Update: Week 20
We had our 20-week checkup today. So far, so good! We go back in four weeks.
I’m feeling a little bit of movement. The doctor told us that my placental wall is up against the outer side of my uterus, so when the baby kicks, she is kicking an extra layer, so it might take longer for me to feel regular movement. But she was very active last night while we were watching “American Idol.” Maybe she’ll be the American Idol champ in 2025 or so!
P.C. is wondering when I'll get crazy cravings. I think he was afraid I'd be waking him up in the middle of the night looking for ice cream and pickles. I wonder if he'd prefer that to my snoring waking him up! (Apparently, pregnancy hormones cause nasal passages to swell.) Poor guy...
So far, I haven't had any wierd cravings, although I eat so many different foods that I haven't felt the urge to eat anything particularly wacky. Tonight, though, if someone would just bring me a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard from Dairy Queen, I would pay them a thousand dollars.
:-) Of course, this craving can't be too bad, because I'm not willing to get in the car and drive fifteen minutes to get one. But if anyone is going to be driving by the Northridge Mall in the next hour...
Also, my blood pressure is great—about 107 over 72.
Here's this week's update from www.babycenter.com:
How your baby's growing: Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. She's also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom, and about 10 inches from head to heel. (For the first 20 weeks, we use measurements taken from the top of the baby's head to her bottom — known as the "crown to rump" measurement. After that, we use measurements from head to toe. This is because a baby's legs are curled up against her torso during the first half of pregnancy and are very hard to measure.)A greasy white substance called vernix caseosa coats her entire body to protect her skin during its long submersion in amniotic fluid. (This slick coating also eases the journey down the birth canal.) Your baby is swallowing more, which is good practice for her digestive system. She's also producing meconium, a black, sticky substance that's the result of cell loss, digestive secretion, and swallowed amniotic fluid. This meconium will accumulate in her bowels, and you'll see it in her first messy diaper (although a few babies pass it in utero or during delivery).

Sometimes I Wonder What People Are Thinking...
...but then, oh yeah, they tell me.
Last night, P.C. and I went to a Passover seder. The evening was lovely enough, except for the following phrases that were blurted out (I'm not kidding) by various relatives (luckily, none by any of my favorites):
"You're so huge!"
"Your boobs are gigantic! You'll have to buy the biggest size bras they sell!"
"You've gained so much weight!"
Now, I'm sure these phrases were uttered without any malicious intent. But, I wonder, were these people trying to comfort my pregnant, fragile body image?
Sometimes I just wish people would keep their thoughts to themselves.
